‘Push & Pull’
This site-specific intervention was part of the exhibition ‘Shaking, Tumbling, and the little mistakes we make along the way’ at Sign in Groningen. The exhibition was separated into three distinct acts, the second of which thematically considering the notion of safekeeping in relation to the artistic process. I chose to incorporate the existing garage door at Sign into an installation that displays various polaroids I’d taken over the years, which show different scenes both of my making processes as well as external influences and inspirations.
The garage door itself acts and is operated in a similar matter (by pushing and pulling) as a camera’s shutter curtain, controlling the amount of light that is allowed into the space. To ‘push and pull’ is photographic terminology for altering the exposure of negatives during the developing process. Working with polaroids, this technique isn’t actually possible.
