‘Getekend’

During one of my hikes through the mountains of Norway I found a place in the woods where multiple trees had been damaged on purpose. Axe marks could be found on their bark, which in many cases had been stripped off by large parts. Most of the trees had rusty nails been driven into them as well. All this made for a sorrowful scene and the silence that resided in the area made me more aware that the trees were still alive. It’s a place I revisited many times afterwards.

This tree in particular left an impression on me. In an almost painterly manner, a large piece of its bark had been removed, uncovering the inner world of the tree. It reminded me of the ways I work with my material, erasing layers of images to create empty or negative spaces.

The print of this photograph is a unique edition. It will carry all the marks and damage that it might suffer over the years and will not be replaced with a new print.

‘Getekend’ has multiple translations. It can be something that is seen as a drawing, but it can also mean being marked or scarred.
